In short

SHI — a book by kintsugi master Denys Rzhavskyi on the four pillars a person stands on: love, death, time, presence. Not philosophy, not doctrine. A way of seeing.

About the book

Most of our lives we don't love — we hold. We don't live our time — we spend it. We stand waist-deep in our own lives and somehow miss them.

SHI is a book by kintsugi master Denys Rzhavskyi. Kintsugi is the Japanese craft of mending broken pottery with gold so the seam shows — bright, unhidden. Afterwards the piece is worth more than it was whole.

This book does the same with people. It stands on four pillars — love, death, time, and presence — and the Japanese word SHI hides two meanings that sound alike: four (四) and death (死). Short chapters, each ending in a single sentence to carry with you. Not philosophy, not doctrine. Optics — a way of seeing.

The broken can be put back together. Not as it was, but as something new, with gold along the seams.

(The book is published in English, Ukrainian and Russian editions.)

About the author

Денис Ржавский / Denys Rzhavskyi

A master of kintsugi

Denys Rzhavskyi is known as a master of kintsugi. He doesn't work with ceramics — he works with people: gathering what's broken and growing, out of the cracks, something that wasn't there before — not a copy of the old, but a new form with a gold seam where the blow landed. SHI is his first book. Not philosophy, not doctrine. A way of seeing.
