SHI is a book by artist and author Denys Rzhavskyi. Kintsugi is the Japanese craft of mending broken pottery with gold so the seam shows — bright, unhidden. Afterwards the piece is worth more than it was whole.
This book does the same with people. It stands on four pillars — love, death, time, and presence — and the Japanese word SHI hides two meanings that sound alike: four (四) and death (死). Short chapters, each ending in a single sentence to carry with you. Not philosophy, not doctrine. Optics — a way of seeing.
The broken can be put back together. Not as it was, but as something new, with gold along the seams.

Denys Rzhavskyi works under the artistic name Master of Kintsugi. Kintsugi is the Japanese tradition of visible repair; he uses it as the name of a method, not as a craft qualification. The same attention goes to people: gathering what's broken and growing, out of the cracks, something that wasn't there before — not a copy of the old, but a new form with a gold seam where the blow landed. SHI is his first book. Not philosophy, not doctrine. A way of seeing.
